I am making a statement right now that none of the writing on this blog will ever be AI generated. These are all my unique human thoughts. Based on vibes and timing, I suspect that the recent wave of not-mature content (like, say, a photo of a teddy bear plush toy) being labeled as mature is the result of AI fuckery.

Before I continue, know that:

Tumblr was acquired by Automattic, Inc. a few years ago.

Matt Mullenweg is the CEO of Automattic.

Mullenweg is the founding developer of the widely-used web content management system WordPress, which is free and open-source.

Automattic owns WordPress.com, a private company that hosts WordPress sites.

Mullenweg is in a legal war with WPEngine.com, a different for-profit company that hosts WordPress sites.

Starting in December, Automattic has been working on making Tumblr run on WordPress.

For the past few days I've been hearing about perfectly innocent tumblr posts being flagged as "mature." This is precisely the sort of thing gen AI/LLMs do because they're pretty much guessing machines.

IMO, and I hope I'm wrong, Tumblr will be enshittified like Twitter was by Musk, and the owners of Duolingo did when they replaced most of their human translators with AI. I personally quit Duolingo when I noticed an abrupt decline in lesson quality. It was after I'd stopped visiting that I learned about the AI fuckery.

In light of the current shit with tumblr making us opt-out of sharing our blogs with AI scrapers, I checked the state of Wordpress for this and, not surprisingly since it's the same company, you need to opt out there too.

If you have a wordpress-blog of the NAME.wordpress.com kind, you need to go into Settings and under the section Privacy, hit the checkmark for "Prevent third-party sharing for NAME.wordpress.com".

I know some of us here at writeblr have secondary blogs on wordpress, so make sure to opt-out of AI scraping there.

just saw the absolute most mesmerisingly weird ad on tumblr and it was what seemed like an entire terrible hetero werewolf fanfiction romantasy movie uploaded as an ad. I couldn't look away. It was so deeply offputtingly awkward and weird and it just kept going on. I was waiting for it to end but it won. I stopped watching because it quite simply did not. end.

I can't and won't leave tumblr. because there's nowhere else really to post art where it can have engagement besides this site, Twitter, and instagram

and sadly all those avenues don't have artists' best interest in mind. but given that commissions and sharing art on social platforms is my only way of making any income

I'll be glazing and using nightshade on my art (I've also opted out of the scraping thru settings), and I'll still be posting, knowing that there's a risk

it's just saddening it's going in this direction. so I ask ppl to support REAL LIVING artists on here, Twitter (who is also scraping for ai), Instagram, and anywhere else because it feels bleak for us
